Based in the sunny Tasman region of New Zealand, nestled between the sea and the mountains, Neudorf Black is a Black Garlic producer and is proud to be a member of the artisanal food and beverage community across Te Tau Ihu, the top of the South Island of New Zealand.
Inspired by ancient superfoods, our locally produced gourmet range strives to capture natural nutritional benefits while delivering an unrivalled taste experience. We believe anyone can create something special with exceptional flavour and nutrition.
We are husband and wife duo, Noël and Teena Jelsma. Like many New Zealanders we believe that good food should not come at the expense of the planet.
We spent 8 years living in Asia, the birthplace of Black Garlic. However, our first tasting experience of Black Garlic was 40 mins from our New Zealand home, at the local market in Nelson, New Zealand. That's where we met Ralph who made Black Garlic paste.
In 2019 while living overseas, we heard that Ralph was looking for a buyer before closing up shop. Unwilling to let New Zealand's best Black Garlic fade into the sunset, we bought Ralph's oven and Neudorf Black was born. We relocated back to our property on Neudorf Road in Upper Moutere in December 2019 and Neudorf Black has traded from there ever since then.
Neudorf Road and the Moutere where we live is home to a collective of talented artisans. We're grateful to be counted as one of them. The Moutere Artisans have an annual open day where we open the gates to our properties and invite the public in to learn, enjoy and buy. Moutere Artisans Open Day is the Sunday of New Zealand's Labour Weekend (October). Read more about it on the Moutere Artisans website.
Diverse crops on our 5 hectare property Tinaku Farm are grown using organic principles; 'from the ground up'. Our focus is on nurturing the earth and goodness that lives beneath our feet. To produce the best Black Garlic products, we work with New Zealand's best garlic growers.
Our packaging is environmentally friendly and we are constantly looking for ways to lighten our footprint on the earth.
Certified Carbon Friendly
In December 2020, to celebrate our first birthday, we calculated the carbon footprint of our first 12 months business operations with Ekos’ *lite online tool.
This means that we used Ekos’ *lite calculator to estimate and offset our business’s 12 months operational emissions with certified carbon credits. These offsets grow and protect forests in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands and help to deliver climate resilience, waterways protection, erosion control, biodiversity conservation and community economic development.
Our power company is also a certified CarboNZero provider. We continue to look at ways we can improve our sustainability as a small business.
